On Tuesday 7th May, our sister organisation, C5 Accelerate, hosted their first ever Impact Investing Summit in London, hosted by their Gold Sponsor, Bird & Bird LLP.
Impact investing aims to generate a positive and quantifiable environmental or social impact, whilst also generating market financial returns. The aim behind this one-day summit was to bring together impact investors, innovators and entrepreneurs alongside thought leaders and changemakers from both public and private sectors.
André Pienaar, Founder of C5, stated, “We are bringing together a number of terrific founders from around the world, all of whom are grappling with real world problems and using technology and innovation to create change. C5 strongly believes in harnessing the power of cloud technology and venture capital to accomplish this.”
As well as being a great opportunity for the attendees to network, there was a series of insightful panel discussions on themes such as agritech, financial inclusion and renewable energy.
After some opening remarks from C5’s Founder, André Pienaar, the day moved on to its first keynote, presented by Kanini Mutooni, Managing Director of EMEA for Toniic, a global action community for deeper impact investing. In this keynote, Mutooni discussed why she the impact investing revolution needs to start now.
Next up there were various panel discussions looking at how we, as impact investors, can design an ecosystem for success in both the public and private sectors, and the role both sectors can play in this. Another panel was on setting industry standards so that the social and environmental impact can be successfully measured, and a further panel, close to our Founder, André Pienaar’s heart, on inclusion and diversity in the digital era.
With more networking opportunities the afternoon session began with the delegates broken out into one of two tracks, with further keynotes, panel discussions, lightning pitches and cyber security masterclasses. ITC Secure, one of C5 Capital’s Portfolio Companies, hosted a keynote on Women in Cyber, a fascinating insight into the life of a woman working within the tech industry, with a particular focus on cyber security.
After further lightening pitches from start-ups who have gone through our C5 Accelerate program, the day was closed off with remarks from C5 Accelerate COO, Eva-Maria Dimitriadis and C5 Global Chief Operating Officer, Kurt Scherer, looking at what next steps the industry can take on the road ahead.
